BIRGITTA HERNESAARI
Founded by Pia and Tommi Leppälä, Birgitta Hernesaari opened in 2014 and has since grown into a gem of modern wooden architecture as well as one of Helsinki’s best-known summer destinations. Built on the open seafront of Hernesaari, the café-restaurant was designed by architects Minna Lukander and Jari Heikkinen. Its charred, coal-black façade and frame made of non-settling Honka Fusion logs blend naturally into the maritime landscape.
The building, composed of three log structures of varying heights, forms a sheltered ensemble where large glass surfaces and sliding elements bring the sea into the space. The central fireplace offers warmth on cooler days, and the wide terrace opens toward the open sea, providing a view that is as unobstructed as anywhere in Helsinki.
Birgitta was awarded Log Building of the Year 2014 for its bold architecture that combines traditional log construction with innovative new solutions. Pia and Tommi Leppälä aimed to create a place where wood, fire and sea come together to build a unique atmosphere, and where Helsinki shows its best side to travelers passing through Hernesaari.
Open during the summer season, Birgitta is known for the delicious dishes from its charcoal grill, its classic burgers and its relaxed maritime vibe. The food is prepared on a handcrafted Mibrasa charcoal grill, which gives the flavors their distinctive smokiness. Birgitta is also a dog-friendly meeting place where locals, visitors and people seeking the sea’s edge come together.
Ten years ago, Hernesaari was nearly empty, and the arrival of Birgitta together with its neighbors created an entirely new maritime urban culture in the area. Today, the Hernesaari shoreline is a lively and beloved summer hangout for many Finns and international visitors. As the environment continues to change, Birgitta must evolve as well. This is why we are currently building a new Birgitta and, at the same time, a new maritime Helsinki. Together with our partners, we aim to ensure that the future Birgitta will serve the people of Helsinki for many decades to come.
